Kiddush Cleanup

REVISED 8-30-18

Welcome to kiddush cleanup! Please read these instructions all the way through before you start, even if you have done kiddush cleanup before, as changes to these directions have been recently made.

  • Kiddush cleanup is a different assignment from general cleanup.
  • When relevant, see notes about Nosh and Drash shabbatot.

Your main role

Kiddush cleanup families stay until the end of kiddush, clear the kiddush area of all food and supplies, and put everything away. Specific tasks are listed below.

Note that we now store paper goods and other nonfood items in our “lower storage area,” located behind two folding doors at the beginning of the hallway that runs from behind Berenson Hall back to our main storage areas.

You are not responsible for cleaning up the kids' kiddush. That task is done by the parents.

Responsibilities and details

            Clearing the kiddush room

  • Clear the tables on which kiddush has been served and clean up major spills and crumbs. Note, however, that the custodian cleans the floor later.
  • Dispose of the food, trays, and all plastic cutlery in the garbage containers provided, but do not throw out any bowls or platters labeled “Minyan.”
  • Large plastic serving bowls and covers from the caterer are not recyclable. If not taken home to wash, they must be thrown out.Occasionally, a Minyan member will offer to take all recyclables home for recycling. That person will identify him/herself to you.
  • Recycle (if a minyan member is not collecting): Bottles and cans only in the separate, colorful recycling bin, if available. The bin may be in the cafeteria. Bring the recyclables there if possible.
  • Return unused paper products, unused plastic utensils, and tea and coffee fixings to their designated places in the lower storage unit (small closet with sink). Put all items back exactly where they belong. Everything is labeled!
  • PLEASE INFORM THE CURRENT 'STORGANIZER' IF SUPPLIES NEED REPLENISHING.
  • Leave the hot water urn on the table. The custodian will take care of unplugging, rinsing, and storing it. DO empty the glass, cold water jug into the sink in the Lower Storage Room (see below).
  • If there are significant quantities of cracker/baked goods leftovers, either leave in original containers or place in sealed bags (take from lower storage area cupboard). Return these to the large fridge in the main storage area.
  • Make sure all garbage bags are left in the foyer. DO NOT LEAVE ANY GARBAGE ANYWHERE ELSE.
  • DO NOT LEAVE ANY OPEN BOXES OF CRACKERS OR OTHER NONPERISHABLE ITEMS IN EITHER STORAGE AREA!!!
  • If any Minyan bowls/platters/non-disposable knives or other serving utensils have been used:
    • FIRST, wipe all solids from them with a paper towel
    • Wash in the lower storage sink
    • DO NOT WASH OR THROW ANY SOLIDS INTO THIS SINK, AS IT WILL CLOG!!
    • Dry items with paper towel from the storage area counter
    • Return bowls and platters to the adult kiddush cart for replacement in the main storage room, utensils to their lower storage room drawer.
    • Baskets should be thoroughly shaken out for crumbs and returned to the cabinet marked 'baskets' in the lower storage area.

       Perishable leftovers

  • Encourage Minyan members to take leftover perishable food home (using the small plastic containers on the cart or Ziploc bags from the lower storage area). You may also offer it to the Hebrew College maintenance staff.
  • Large quantities of leftover cream cheeses should be returned to the large refrigerator.
  • Return the drinks, wine and grape juice to the stainless steel refrigerator in the main storage room. All beverages should be tightly capped for use the following week.
  • Don't return any other food to the refrigerator except in special cases (such as a two-day chag, when they can be used the next day).
  • If perishable leftovers are not taken by anybody, you must discard them.

Cleaning the lower storage room

  • Wipe down the counter, using the spray cleaner and paper towel provided.
  • Empty, rinse carefully, and invert the glass cold water jug onto paper towels on the counter.
  • Leftover Scotch should be left on the counter.

Setting up for next week

  • Place six bottles of seltzer and two bottles of juice in the large refrigerator for the following week.
  • Return the two carts labeled "Newton Centre Minyan Adult Kiddush Cart" to the main storage room.
